Public Health Nursing is the practice of promoting and protecting the health of populations using knowledge from nursing, social and public health sciences. The practice of Public Health Nursing is population focused with the goals of promoting health and preventing disease and disability for all people by creating healthy conditions.

     Public Health Nursing services include:

                                                                                                  

  • Providing guidance and recommendations to school nurses regarding pupil health matters
  • Conducting audits at schools, day care centers, and pre-schools to ensure children are  properly immunized against vaccine preventable diseases
  • Ensuring maternal and child health services by providing referrals for child health conference (CHC) clinics (various services are provided during CHC clinics such as physical examinations, developmental assessment, counseling, and referrals)
  • Providing influenza immunizations to older adults and persons who may be at risk for influenza infection
  • Performing cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk assessments/screenings
  • Coordinating cancer screening services for older adults
  • Providing consultation and referrals for health and social services
  • Providing referrals for medical and social services
  • Investigating communicable diseases and outbreaks of disease
